Tea Review - Fae Inspired: Sunshine Honey Lavender

So here I am, you all know that I Love Tea. Like, adore it beyond anything (well almost anything, see: glitter and keys.)
I'm going to start a weekly tea review, or at least try to make it weekly. Tuesday nights to be exact.

I'll be reviewing any tea that I buy or any tea that shows up at my house. (This may or may not be a hint.)

This week is a tea blend from one of my favorite tea shops. Fae Inspired (aka Faerie Tea).

Blend Name: Sunshine Honey Lavender

Sweetener Used: None
Milk Used: None

Steeping Time: 4 minutes

Overall Opinion: At first smell while steeping this blend is a very strong lavender, I was afraid that the blend itself would taste strongly of lavender as well but I was very pleased to find it was just right. The lavender is not overpowering at all, and I for one am not a huge lavender fan. The aftertaste is reminiscent of a Japanese rice candy.
This would be a very good before bed tea if the drinker was not susceptible to caffeine, otherwise I would suggest the Rooibus Honey Lavender tea.

How it's done

If you've been following my blog you might have seen photos of glass beads and comments that I make glass beads.
This post is to show you a bit of the behind the scenes stuff. I took some photos while working yesterday, and I'm going to share them with you.

Let's get started, shall we?

This, is my workbench. Yep, where all the glassy magic happens. Its not usually any cleaner than what you see here.

And apparently I've started collecting cute things to go on top of my ventilation hood. I'm okay with this fact. Right now I have a turtle and two pirate duckies with an old fashioned coke bottle behind them. This collection may grow.

This is my kiln. This is really where all of the magic happens. When I'm done with a bead I pop it into the kiln (960 degrees! or 954 in this case, it'll get there.) and the kiln will control the cooling process at roughly 400 degrees an hour so the beads don't stress fracture.

This is my glass. I have a lot of colors, but I also have room for a lot more. I work with 104 coe glass, coe is the Coefficient of Expansion. It's pretty awesome but I won't bore you. :)

All of these things allow me to make works of art like:

Where have the days gone?

It's December.

Seriously. Where did the time go?

I find that the tree has gone up, the lights are on the houses... and there are presents being wrapped. Have I mentioned that's my favorite thing to do? I LOVE wrapping presents! All of the choices make me SO HAPPY. I mean really, the greens, the candy cane print... I love it all!

(Yes, these are actually presents that are under the tree over here.)

Along with wrapping presents, and shipping presents I find myself at the torch a ton more than normal. Today I took more beads over to The Peacock Shop. Lots of Triton beads, which I am very excited about. Triton is like Clio, only blue. (Don't know what Clio looks like? See this post)

I'll probably get a photo of all of the new goodies soon though, until then I have lots of new beads up on etsy.

So, tell me. What is your favorite part of the holidays?

!!!

Dear Blog:

I finished 50,000 words in 26 days, validated it and everything. I would like you to know that I managed for the first time in about 12 years to win NaNoWriMo.

Me. This Pooka. I won.
See???? They even gave me a nifty badge thingie!

I'm really excited that I actually won, and ahead of schedule. Mind you, my story might be half done, if I'm lucky... So I still have a lot more to write (and I'm working on it too!).

On top of that I'm going through and editing MORE of the novel that I started for NaNo 2007, and didn't finish until '08 or '09.

Maybe, just maybe both of these will some day go to beta readers. (fingers crossed here)

Holiday Shopping - A Pooka's Opinion.

Here I am, a few days before this Holiday that you're supposed to stuff yourself silly with turkey and other yummy things.

I'm also more than half done with my Yule shopping. (*gasp!*)

I decided that this year I would do more shopping at small businesses than I have in years past. There are some things that you can't get from handmade shops though, and if that's the case I try to find small business shops that sell things like CDs and DVDs.

Some of my favorite shops are over on Etsy though.

Here's just a few!:

Glamourkin is a small shop that's run by an amazing author (Here's a link to Sarah's blog). The pieces that she sells are made of pure magic, and great gifts for anyone! (Yes, even boys.)

I'm a huge fan of handmade soaps too. I find that they don't dry out my skin nearly as much, and they smell soooo yummy!

If you have any anime fans on your list, this shop is pretty rockin for them! From actual costumes to cute scarves and jewelry, they're a pretty epic pair!

Looking for some awesome art? Shadowcat has an Etsy shop too! Here you can find great Steampunk pieces in Art Nouveau style.

I just got my brand new Kindle cover from this great shop. My darling Sven (pictured above) will be headed home to me very soon, I am so excited! She has some of Sven's family still for sale in her shop, go take a look!

Lucky!

So a few days ago I was reading through my blog list when I came across This Blog holding a contest of sorts. She asked for suggestions of what to put on her "Treasure Tubes" and whoever she chose would get a Treasure Tube with their chosen word on it. Being me I suggested "Believe" and I got an e-mail today telling me I won!!!!! :D

SO EXCITED!!!!!

I can't wait to do something AWESOME with it, and *gasp* wear it on stage!

I'll post photos when I get it!!! :D

You can find her Etsy Shop Here.

A Benefit

Yesterday I was given the honor to be able to sing with Pandora Celtica at a benefit for a woman that has impacted many, many lives in Colorado. Especially those around the Colorado Faire circuit.

It was an amazing benefit, so many people showed up to support this woman.

What was even better? The look on her face as she walked in and realized exactly what we were doing. We stood as she walked in, and just applauded. No words, no yelling of "surprise!" but honest and caring applause.

It was magical.

(This photo was taken on the drive home from Nebraska.)

Mile High Con and The Colorado Springs Witches Ball 2011

Wow!

No, seriously. Wow.

If you haven't been to Mile High Con, you should go next year. Go buy your tickets as soon as they go on sale and GO!
The people there are amazing, and not only did I get to sing a lot and have my art in the art show, I also bought two new books to read! I'll post some reviews when I finish them. :)

The thing I like most about MHC? The fact that everyone is so friendly and willing to network and talk and geek out. The bellydancing zombies this year didn't hurt either!

So Saturday after playing all day at MHC we headed to the Colorado Spring Witches Ball. What FUN that was!!! I got to buy things too... so that didn't hurt!
We sang with all of the energy we had, and it was warm on that stage! But so very worth it. I really hope that we can go back and sing again next year!

Sunday it was back to MHC to help out in the art show, that was a blast in a half. I met so many new friends there!

Alright, I wanted to post this even if it's disjointed. Why? Because in 2.5 hours I start NaNoWriMo.

So, to leave you all smiling:

New glass!

So some of you may or may not know that I melt glass. Yep. I make shiny, awesome things out of glass. (I just think they're shiny, but people like Kyra tell me they're awesome.)
Well since Dragon*Con I hadn't been torching much... and honestly it was just about killing me. I'd wander into my studio and stare longingly at my torch and kiln... and then I'd wander back out. Too much to do, too much to do.

But! I have stolen away bits and pieces of time! (and there was much rejoicing!)
Remember: You can find my glass beads for sale here. I also take commissions and offer bulk discounts for jewelry designers. Just e-mail me.

My Faerie Bubbles beads. Kyra has used them in her designs.

These are made of Clio. One of my most favorite glasses ever!

 Spacers!
Something in the fall spirit. :)

Here I sit...

Here I sit, listening to the screaming of angry children not getting their way, or the parents that yell at said children... And I have to wonder, really; what happened to Mortals? What changed them from creatures that had some sense of self preservation, honesty and politeness to what we see today? Maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture here, I mean... there are so many amazing people taking part in things they believe in. Like Occupy Wallstreet. They aren't being dangerous, or stupid (from what I've seen) they are merely voicing their opinions... and in turn they are creating something huge and amazing and magical.

...Yes, I know that not everyone will agree with that. I'm sure that someone out there somewhere is going to scoff at my view of the world, but frankly? I don't care. These are my opinions, and I like my views of the current goings on.

But back to the original topic. What changed? It seems like, for every one Mortal that is following his or her dream, there are 4 or 5 others that are simply... not. They are the bullies, the screamers, the people that are violent and act out... So what happened to the Mortals that will open doors for women or the elderly? What happened to small town chivalry or decency?

Am I missing something? Tell me I am. Tell me I'm missing the big picture, tell me I'm missing the chivalrous men that sill open doors and help old ladies across the street. Tell me I'm blind.

Because really? I'm just confused and slightly down trodden.

(Wow... This wasn't supposed to be a sad post! lol)

The World: Faerie

When one finds themselves in Faerie it is not as simple as just turning and walking out, at least not for a mortal. Faerie is a fickle thing, something that weaves and changes like the tide or the wind. One moment you could be facing a brick wall, turn to look behind you and when you face forward again you find that a vineyard or orchard has taken its place.

Now, most Mortals might find this to be very disturbing. Fae and Otherkin that call Faerie home find it to be quite the opposite. When the lands of faerie stop changing at the whim of the unknown, then and only then would the inhabitants worry. After all, most Fae are at least aware of change… Some might not be as fond of it as others, but it is a fact of the land they live in.

When a Mortal first finds themselves in Faerie, they are often struck by how odd it all is. Water comes straight out of stones, flowers of unusual colors, ice next to flame, and the weather changes in the blink of an eye. Nothing is normal and yet everything is. The easiest way through the chaos is to find yourself a Fae guide.

This is the point where any Mortal should know something very, very important. Nothing is free in the lands of Faerie. If you need directions a barter is made, often times the Fae in question will ask for something small; a thimble, a kiss, something shiny, the memory of your first true love’s kiss, your first memory as a child. To them, all of these things are small, but each Fae has something to gain from what they request as payment. What this means is that you, as a Mortal should be very careful what you promise or barter away.

This is the first of many blurbs on the world of Pandora Celtica. I hope you enjoyed it!

BrethrenCon II

Let me start this blog post out by saying I love pirates. I love pirates quite a lot indeed!!!!

Which then means that I love Brethren Con... Cause well... It's full of pirates!

We had some amazing Boothies (the lovely Circa whom we all love, and Delrein who's new). That's all of our awesome merchandise too! CDs, shirts... shiny things.

We got to run around and play all day Saturday before our set. I got a really nifty SQUARE key from the Dealer's Room, caught up with some old friends and even had the chance to make new ones.

Photo thanks to Brian D Reed of Ahsome photography

I had an amazing time there. After our set came the Kilt Blowing. Yes, I'm completely serious. They take men in kilts (who, might I add, volunteer for this) and they blow the kilts, Marilyn Monroe style. (Feel free to look it up on YouTube for video from Dragon*Con kilt blowings. None from BrethrenCon are up yet.)
Here's one of my favorite photos that I took. I know that the quality of the photo itself is weird- the lighting of the room was screwing with my camera :)

Not only was there kilt blowing, but it was from both sides with TWO leaf blowers! We're hardcore out here in Colorado!

I'm VERY excited for next year's BrethrenCon. It promises even MORE pirates, kilt blowing and great company. Keep an eye on The BrethrenCon Site for more info on next year's event as it becomes available.

Dragon*Con 2011

Another year of Dragon*Con comes to a close.

Yes, I know that I'm about a week late posting this, but we had the whooole drive home (24 hours) and then I managed to catch the con crud which kicked my butt for a good few days. (Thank goodness for tea!)

(Thank you to Aris and Kendrah for this video and many many others!)
I know that the colors are wonky, but it was the Time Traveler's Ball! We were like... rockstars or something! All of the lights and the people and I got to DANCE during ShadowCat's drum solo! (insert a squee here) I really don't usually... dance. Not like I feel like I was that night on stage, but that could just be a Pooka being completely overwhelmed by adrenaline and many other emotions and energy and yay!

The con was AMAZING! I know that last year I had a blast, but this year? Even better. I am still floored by the fact that people RECOGNIZED me in the halls. I mean.. really? I'm humbled, and tickled pink. Thank you to everyone that came by the booth, or came to talk to us after shows. Thank you to the countless people that took photos, the people that allowed me to steal their hats to take photos in them. The Con staff and volunteers that kept everything as sane as possible. The HOTEL STAFF that dealt with our insanity...

I had such a blast singing Filk, talking with everyone at DarkCon, seeing Abney Park (Yay! I made it to their show) with Mudbutton, Got to visit with old friends, make new ones, I learned I can run up at least two flights of stairs in a corset and NOT black out, I learned apple pie is the best drink in the world, and that when given the chance, I will be in Atlanta next year!

I also want to give a special thank you to all of the boothies that dealt with the band's insanity, and to Kendrah and Aris for being so amazing and taking so many videos of us.

And I leave you with... a filk!

The Insanity Explained

So some of you may or may not know that I enjoy doing something simply called "Bead Embroidery". You may ask what bead embroidery is, well it's the act of hand stitching millions of tiny beads together to some variety of backing to create a work of art like this:

Sadly I didn't time how long that piece took, it was my very first. Since then I've done a few more:

Well, I find that doing work like this is very relaxing (as crazy as that sounds, I mean come on. Who doesn't enjoy sewing bajillions of tiny beads down?) and so I've started on a new project.

See this corset?

Soon, it's going to be COVERED in beaded embroidery.
Yep. You read that right.

I'm insane :)

Of shiny, dreams and insanity.

I'm a bad Pooka aren't I? It's been almost two months since I've posted here... I swear I'm not slacking off!

Instead I'm going to make a photo post of all of the things I've been making. Ready for it? :)

Yay photo spam! What else is going on? Well (in case you didn't know) this Pooka is crazy. I'm plotting something completely shiny-filled... It's going to be epic! Sadly it won't be done in time for Dragon*Con.

Speaking of Dragon*Con- less than a MONTH!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLY CRAP!@!! @$#%^&%$%^%&*^
I'm not ready!!!!! I feel kind of like my brain is rattling around in my head as I try to but together countless keys, bottles, costumes, clothing.... Oh heavens.

And what else? Oh yes! Pandora Celtica got a new website. This new site includes new photos, songs that you can play, forums, and even bios for each of us! I'm very excited for this new addition.

Q&A

So some time ago I posed the request on facebook: Ask me questions that I can answer in a q&a here on blogger.

They answered the request, oh yes they did! So here it is: Your first Q&A blog post!

Grygori: I wanted you to tell us from your perspective what it means to be Pooka.  Give us your view on their characteristics physical/personality/supernatural, etc.  We've read some out of books, but now give us a personal account. :D
What it means to be a Pooka? Well, I know that a lot of the Myths say that all Pooka are shape shifters, or that they are horses with orange eyes and blah, blah, blah. They are said to be mysterious tricksters. Me? I must be a rarity. Yeah, I suppose I could change forms if I really really wanted to... But why waste the energy? I'm a friendly, energetic, flirty individual that loves to sing and dance (the second one only usually when no one is watching).

Also from Grygori: What do you look for in the male of the species?
Ah... I'm blushing here. You really really want to know this? Uhm... Well... I look for a male that is friendly, strong in personality, has a sense of humor, can handle my erratic schedule and crazy personality. A male that has their life well in focus.... Uhm... Yes.

Siren: What was your first experience with Pandora Celtica?
My very first experience with Pandora Celtica was actually long before I knew what I was hearing. A friend of mine took me to a Witches' Ball around Halloween one year. I heard Pandora Celtica and fell in love enough to purchase a CD and ask the band to sign it. Fast forward many years where I got ready to audition... and realized that I knew of the band!

Joseph S: Why do dogs have wet noses?
Dogs have wet noses because they have to have something to nudge you with to make you realize they're there. Otherwise how would you know to give them scritches???

William K: How did it feel when you joined PC and how long do you see yourself in the group?
It felt amazing to join Pandora Celtica. My new family opened me with open arms and since then I have had some of the most amazing experiences of my life. I see myself in the group for as long as they'll have me.

William K: Do you see yourself making it big with your jewelry or with PC?
I see myself making it big with Pandora Celtica. Jewelry is more of a relaxing fun thing for me, I much prefer to just create when it strikes me.

John H: What...is the air speed velocity of an unladen faerie?
Irish or Scottish? What's their wing pattern and magic of choice? :)

All of the following are from Miss Leora:
What is your favorite mischief to cause?
Glitter bombing. Though, I'm a huge fan of dumping glitter into the shoes of visiting Courtiers... Mind you that Mab is NEVER amused by that.

3.) What is your favorite Pandora Celtica memory?
I've had a few of them and most of them involve me crying happy tears. Dragon*Con last year was a huge one... DarkCon was an amazing event within D*Con and I still hold very fond memories of that game.

4.) Out of all the songs the band performs, which one do you like performing most?
One that we haven't recorded yet? :) Okay, Okay... Out of the ones that we have... Either Smuggler's Song or.... Bedlam Boys. I think. Though to be honest, I really really really love singing 99.9% of all of our songs.

5.) Where do you find your inspiration for your glasswork?
The sun, the moon, the breeze... Everything and anything. Most recently it's been the glass itself. I was just able to start playing with this AMAZING glass called Clio. It's shiny and has some of the most amazing properties...

6.) Why do you like keys so much?
Have you SEEN them???? I mean... Well... Okay so in Faerie keys are a bit different... but that's another post entirely. I love keys because for me they symbolize freedom.

7.) In you opinion, what is the grossest thing in the world?
Yams. Yams and roadkill and... other gross stuff.

8.) If you could change one thing about society, what would it be and why?
How closed minded people are. I can't even explain how much it honks me off that people as a whole can be such closed minded bigots.

9.) What is your favorite part about being a faerie?
I get to play!! It's fun to talk to people and make friends and it's just so much fun! That and the fact that the Mortal world is so... different than Faerie. So I get to discover new things about the Mortal world on a daily basis!

So here it was! My very FIRST Q&A ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you all for coming to read, and if you have questions that you want added to the next Q&A please feel free to send them to rubiee.tallyn@gmail.com

Scarborough Adventure: 2011

So some of you may know that last year in late April I took the trek down to Scarborough Renaissance Festival in Waxahachie, Texas. Well this year I was given the chance to again visit the magic that is Scarborough-shire.

Captain Velvet and I set off from the crazy town of Denver with no rush. I have to admit that I still don't understand why Requiem and Discordia wouldn't let me take the dragon... The car is so much slower!

We drove and drove and drove some more, stopping in Amarillo for an overnight stay before finally making it to Waxahachie.

The first morning was like being a  child all over again. I was up early, and dressed and we made it to the festival before canon. Once we got in a made a beeline for Wondrous Works in Wood for a new mug. That was my only purchase for the weekend as I was quickly re-adopted by my friends... And thus began the amazement.

That first day I was adopted by the Spanish court. I walked parade with them, dined with them and was even given the honor of being able to perform a masque! I was the pirate captain!

Halfway through the day I was tempted away by a trio of handsome Irishmen- whom I got to sing Smuggler's Song with. Pure bliss. The Korabushka was so much fun, I was claimed by George Boleyn! Canon sounded far too early for my tastes and the day was over.

The second day I became an honorary Gyptian. Iosef himself swore me in, he is the Rombaro. I was able to walk parade with them and make merry in the streets. The Irish again tempted me away to sing an old favorite, "Old Black Rum". We played and sang and made a wondrous sight... I hope. And I made some of the best friends a Pooka could have. I got to dance the Korabushka with Iosef and found myself full of joy. I was also at that point promised a shopping partner or two, for the following day.

The third day was bittersweet, I wanted to enjoy it as best I could but I didn't want it to end. My shopping was done with company from two old friends and a gentleman from Scarborough-shire. The far best memory I have from that day is when the gentleman found he had insulted me he flung himself upon the ground and groveled (face in the dirt) to try and win back my favor... No one has ever done such for me before. It made me smile, and realize how different things are from faire to faire. I only wonder in Mab will send me to Scarborough-shire for the Pandora Project at some point... I can only hope!

Closing gate had me in tears. The three days that I had spent there was like walking in a dream. I went from having friends and acquaintances to having a family that welcomed me with open arms and embraced me with some of the best hugs I have ever had. They tried their hardest to tempt me to move, to become one of them... but I had to say no. My heart wept with every denial. I can't move to Texas, I am needed in Colorado.....

So until next season, my friends, my family. My best wishes and fondest dreams are with you.

Court Post: The Spring Equinox

The transition from winter to spring has always been an amazing thing. Titania always had the flair for the dramatic. This season's transition of the courts was no different.
I was called to Mab's side early on the day of the switch, I was to be with her during the ceremony as I am Duchess of Shadow Grove. (Yes, I know that in Mortal history Duchess' were of royal blood... Faerie often works quite a but differently.)
The day was a whirlwind of preparation. From flowers, (Mab prefers jasmine) to glamour and in my case, glitter. The royal clothiers had their work cut out for them. Mab was demanding, everything had to be perfect.
I know that Titania and her court were going through the same thing that day. All the courts were.

When the clock struck the designated hour (no, I can't tell you what hour) the ceremony began. First, Mab's court entered. They announced us as we arrived and Mab was last.
I remember the glory of her entrance, snow fell softly on the crowd and I caught a few pixies flitting about to catch the flakes. When they did they are them with child-like enthusiasm. I would have laughed if it weren't a court function.
She took her seat at the head of the great hall and a hush fell.

I felt the warmth on the breeze before the snow began to melt, Titania entered the hall. She didn't get an announcement, she didn't need one.
I watched the Spring Queen make her way down the great hall. Where she stepped, flowers bloomed. The room stayed silent, they were all in awe as she shone with spring time glamour. She was so bright that her presence threatened to burn the eyes.
I watched her as she walked, trying not to pull my eyes away for fear of insult. When she reached the dais Mab stood and their eyes met, Mab smiled and spoke the words I knew by heart, "This throne once mine, is passed to you. Guard it well and rule it true. From winter to spring, season to season. Keep Fae safe and give it reason."
Titania responded, "Thank you sister. You have ruled with wisdom, I graciously take my place.. and let spring BEGIN!"

A cheer went up from the crowd. May job was complete and as Titania's court entered, and the winter court took our places among the crowd.
Titania was Queen, Mab became an advisor until the next winter.

Exciting news!!!!!

Well my lovelies, it looks like Pandora Celtica will once again be at Dragon*Con!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How exciting is that?? I know that I'm bouncing off the walls and jittering with excitement. I had such a blast last year that this year only promises to be x100000 better!!!! (Maybe this year I won't get turned around and lost in the hotels....)

Also? This coming weekend we will be at Beltania! I'm very excited to go back and visit the people and the land again. Last year was magical- and I still remember the morning that we had fresh coconut for breakfast. It was so much fun!

New gigs means new costuming. Today I get to go out and buy fabric for two new skirts! They will be simple, but that's okay. I just need more than a black skirt. (Yes, Mab still needs to pay me more.)
And I'm working on a second belt. As if my first one isn't enough... But this second one I think will have more black and silver on it. After all, a Pooka can't have too many keys!

Starfest!

Pandora Celtica had the pleasure of singing at Starfest for a full three days!!! What does that mean exactly? It means that this Pooka worked her bum off with the rest of her bandies and the amazing Circa. Who, mind you, had a birthday on Saturday!
(Happy Birthday Circa!!!!!)

Starfest was an absolute blast! I got shiny things!

I got to see so many people whom I adore, and I got a new glitter gun! And I met new people and got doused in faux snow! And Sunday was my birthday, I'm officially 2640 years old! Can you believe it?

Next up? Beltania! :)

Favorite Things....

I started out wanting to write a post about scents, abut my favorite 'smelly' things. But after competing in the Rocky Mountain Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival I'm pretty brain dead. So! This post is going to be allllll about my favorite things!

First off? Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab. See? I have to start with the scents after all. This is the perfumery that I wear scents from almost every day. Personal favorites? Black Rose, Lust, Come To Me Boy, Samhain, Devil's Night....

Timeless Trends. Most if not all of my corsets come from here. I love the fact that I can get a corset that holds up to the wear and tear I put it through.

Music. Right now my fascinations lie with Abney Park, the Tangled Soundtrack, Sisters of Mercy (still), Kerli, Glee, and Great Big Sea.

THIS Shiny Key. :)

Sunday, March 13, 2011

This is all of the shiny bits that I got at the show. Lots and lots of shiny bits! I’m really looking forward to incorporate all of these into pieces, like key pendants, bottles and even my belt! That’s what the bells in the bottom left are for- my new belt.
Yes, I’m making a new belt. I’ve decided that the one I have now is very summer/fall themed so I want something else that I can wear too. Now comes the gathering of even MORE keys, glitter, chains… and now? Crystal! This new belt promises to be very very shiny.
Until then I’m awaiting the arrival of a new skirt, it seems that I can’t find the time to make another one. Mab really should consider giving me a break before Titania takes the throne on the Spring Equinox…. Like that’ll happen!
